Is This An Overview?

Over successive generations, flora and fauna biologically adept to better fit their local conditions.  Improving their ability to survive.  In the competition for scarce resources, those fittest to survive spread to become more numerous.  But due to limits in resources, there are limits to how numerous any species can become.  Larger regions have more biodiversity with increased competition that causes the species to improve further. 

 

Caveats?

This is a difficult book to read due to antediluvian references.  This book is about the data, the evidence, the flora and fauna that explain evolution.  The community effort involved in the validation of the idea of natural selection.  Although a foundational book, improvements have been made since publication to the science, explanations, and descriptions.

Is This An Overview?

Evolution enables biodiversity, but not all species can compete.  Sometimes species disappear, go extinct.  A mass extinction is when there is a significant loss in biodiversity.  Before the rise of humans, the world has experienced mass extinctions.  There have been five such extinctions eras.  Just as humans begin to discover that extinctions are possible, humans discover that they are the cause of another.  The sixth extinction is caused by mostly human activity. 

 

Humans have terraformed the world beyond what many species are capable of adapting to.  Evolutionary fitness becomes meaningless in an era that is experiencing a quickly changing environment.  Some species can benefit within the changed land, air, and water, but often at the expense of many other species.  As humans have harmed the ecosystem, humans are also capable of saving the ecosystem.  Various groups have formed to protect the ecosystem, but these protection efforts are limited for the humans might not know how to properly take care of a species, and the species can become dependent on human protection. 

 

Caveats?

Each chapter is about an extinct or going extinct species, but not necessarily because of human interaction or uniquely human intention.  Which is in contrast to title of the book.  There is not much information about the causes of the general mass extinction.  Various details are provided that add to the length of the book, but do not provide relevant scientific information.

Is This An Overview?

There are limits to quantum and classical physics.  Even math has limits in representing reality.  Reductionism has enabled development of mechanisms, such as computers, for which hardware and software are fixed and separate.  But life contains properties that cannot be reduced to their individual properties, for which hardware and software are not separate, such as cells.  A subject that can learn and adapt to internal and external reality, which is representative of free will.  What has been missing from previous understandings, is consciousness.  While conscious entities can develop phenomena that behave like unconscious matter, unconscious matter cannot produce consciousness.  Consciousness is a property of nature that is irreducible. 

 

Caveats?

The book can be difficult to read.  Part of the difficulty derives from the author trying to explain a novel concept.  Another part of the difficulty derives from the various multidisciplinary jargon used to express the ideas.

Is This An Overview?

The distribution of resources is not uniform across political boundaries.  Resources can become a curse, as demand for the resource can provide motivation for conflict.  States with demand for a resource, but do not have the resource in their region, can develop ideologies and methodologies that justify the seizure of the resource from states that do have the resource.  Justifying atrocities against nature and people to obtain the resource.  Whether the resource is a nutmeg or fossil fuels.  As civilization has become more dependent on unsustainable energy sources, the dependence creates demand for military force to be used for control of regions that contain the sources of energy. 

 

Resources can be allocated to match ends and means.  But what usually happens, is that people deplete a resource.  As sustainable resources and practices are competing against those who provide unsustainable resources and practices, those who do provide the unsustainable resources are preventing societies from transitioning toward sustainable resources. 

 

Caveats?

The examples confirm a single assumption, a single bias, that creates misinformation about history, people, and science.  The examples only provide evidence of when humans are destructive toward nature, with a recognition that there no positive interactions between humans and nature.  This sentiment creates apathy toward the future, as it creates an assumption that nothing can done to change the looming destruction.  But there actually is evidence of nature having a resurgence because of humans changing their behavior, with technology and practices that are making society sustainable.  As this book is apathetic towards the future, the book does not provide a guide on how to overcome the problems.

 

There is an assumption, with evidence, that the methods of capitalism cause environmental destruction.  Due to the author socialist bias, there are no references of socialist decisions that have caused human and environmental destruction.  Nor are there refences to capitalists choosing environmentally favorable decisions because of the profit motive.  All people, no matter their political or regional associations, are capable of unfavorable views toward others, and actions against others.

Is This An Overview?

The metaverse is a massive interoperable network that enables people to synchronously experience virtual worlds with continuity of data.  A virtual place for people to work, and find leisure in.  There are various hardware and software problems that would have to be overcome to enable the metaverse. 

 

Data would need to be interoperable, for different computer systems or software to understand each other.  Products made in a software would need to be read and rendered in other software.  The virtual world would need to have enough data sent, and sent quickly enough to be effective.  While real world physics laws are ubiquitous, for virtual worlds, codes would need to be written for every possible interaction.  Property rights would need to be legislated to determine who the owner of the product is, and how would the transaction be recorded.

 

Caveats?

As development of the metaverse is being led by the virtual gaming industry, much of the book is about virtual games.  There are examples and industries outside the gaming industry, but the virtual gaming industry is prominent.  Terminologies and technological infrastructure problems can be of a general interest, but many of the references can be more interesting to those who play the games.

Is This An Overview?

The complexity of the brain was developed over time through the process of evolution.  Different species have their own survival strategies, their own evolutionary niches, which incorporate various brain sizes, of various complexity, or no brain at all.  What led to human intelligence was a series of five breakthroughs.  The five breakthroughs were steering, reinforcing, simulating, mentalizing, and speaking.  The development of Artificial Intelligence, is based on how people have come to understand the brain. 

 

Intelligence first breakthrough was steering.  All a brain needed to do was steer a body toward increasing food smells, and away from decreasing food smells.  Steering also enabled the brain to avoid dangers.  Steering developed preferences, and emotions.  Intelligence second breakthrough was reinforcing.  Enabled a brain to explore the surroundings, to be curious, and learn what could work or not work.  Intelligence third breakthrough was simulating.  Which is the ability to make predictions, that enabled planning, and to direct attention.  Intelligence fourth breakthrough was mentalizing.  Learning behaviors based on observations of others.  Learning created demand for teaching, which is effective only when someone has a theory of mind, a theory about what information the other has.  Intelligence fifth breakthrough was speaking.  Speaking enabled the accumulation of information. 

 

Caveats?

While there is a lot of content meant for a general audience, there is some content that requires a more technical background.

Is This An Overview?

What people think about the universe depends on their culture, that has been updated over generations.  Updated with a scientific understanding.  Much like how planets hold themselves together through a self-reinforcing pattern, beliefs hold themselves together in a mutual epistemological force.  People have their biases, which can cause them to seek to confirm their views, rather than seek a better understanding.  People can see causes and reasons in events which occurred by random chance.  Science is based on empiricism, deriving knowledge from experiences.  But there are limits to experiences which creates a need to constantly update beliefs.  Within the scientific fields, physics is simple, for within physics, various simplifications of reality still obtain quality results.  In other sciences, social sciences, simplifications tend to create havoc with the results. 

 

Caveats?

There are a variety of different ideas presented in the book which explain features of reality, and ways to think about reality.  The topics are given more than a survey understanding, but that might not be enough to understand the complexity of the topics.  Background information into fields of physics, mathematics, and others is not necessary but can aid in understanding the topics.  Topic interest depends on the reader.

Is This An Overview?

The problem with doomsday environmental narratives is that they can paralyze decision making efforts to solve the crises, and reduce public trust when the claims turn out to be wrong.  Doomsday claims contain a lot of misinformation, which enable policies that appear to be environmentally sustainable but are harming the environment.

 

Through human efforts in obtaining environmentally sustainable knowledge, people have changed practices of production and developed technology that can enable humanity to achieve sustainability in the 21st century.  Achieving sustainability for the first time in human history, as the world has never before been sustainable.  Throughout history, people either could not satisfy their present needs, or they compromised future needs.  There used to be a sustainability trade-off, a conflict between human well-being and environmental protection as each came at the expense of the other.  But, technology and methods have enabled the ability to achieve both human well-being and environmental protection at the same time.

 

There used to be a trade-off between cheap energy sources or environmentally sustainable energy sources.  But technology has enabled environmentally sustainable energy sources to become cost-competitive with unsustainable technologies.  Removing the trade-off as the cheap energy sources are the sustainable sources.  Economic policies no longer need to be in conflict with environmental sustainably, as economies can grow while reducing pollution.  Although energy use has increased relative to how much was used before, there is far less pollution than before.  There are many different ways that human society is much better than in the past such as life expectancy, food availability, education, and income opportunities.  But there is still much for humanity to resolve. 

 

Caveats?

To overcome environmental sustainability misinformation, various metrics are used to show the evidence of certain claims.  The evidence is presented in a way that does not require a statistics background.  As the author references, the focus of the metrics is on environmental sustainability, while societies have various needs for which different metrics would be more appropriate.

Is This An Overview?

During the 20th century, Americans recognized how the ecosystems has been harmed and damaged.  In response, various environmental organizations were born.  Culture gradually changed to become more protective of the flora and fauna.  The protection was so successful, that there are species which were near extinct, which began to flourish, and have become overpopulated.  Overpopulation of animals has negative consequences for people and the ecosystem.

 

As people have lost tacit experiences with the ecosystem, people no longer know how to properly protect and interact with the ecosystem.  The more animals there are, the more food resources are needed.  Species which have become overpopulated due to human intervention such as by giving them more food, cannot find enough food for themselves in their habitats, leading to starvation. 

 

Human intervention can be on an ecosystem scale, but often, people advance the cause of a few or a single species.  While the supported and protected species becomes overpopulated, the species competes with unprotected species, taking away resources from the unprotected species.  Protecting a single species at the expense of others damages the ecosystem, as the numbers of the unsupported species decline.  An overpopulation can pollute and degrade the ecosystem thought their consumption methods and waste, which damages the habitats of other creatures.

 

Animals which habituated to the presence of humans, and recognize that humans are not a threat, can become a threat to humans.  Those who handle animal related problems are appreciated by those whose problems they resolve, but are disapproved by those who idealize the animals. 

 

Various means of controlling species populations are discussed within communities, often with tense debates as the various interest groups do not think the means of others are appropriate.  As culture has become protective of animals, many do not want to use lethal means of controlling the population.  Even though people do not want to use lethal means, people appear to not find the frequent road kill as problematic. 

 

Who Invaded Who?

As people invaded animal regions, animals reciprocated by invading human regions.  Though developing an environment for people, certain species have benefited from these developments as well.  Species which were able to thrive in developments for people, which otherwise would have had difficulty surviving.  Within human associated regions, there are various legal protections for animals, such as laws that prohibit hunting.

 

How To Control The Population?

There are lethal methods of reducing animal populations, but they have become disapproved of.    The overpopulation of animals makes hunting seasons less effective, for they remove less animals than the reproduction rate of the animal, and there are less people willing to hunt.

 

A nonlethal method of removing animals from an environment is to relocate the animal.  Relocation is not a safe method as relocated animals have low survival odds.  The animals are relocated to strange environments and need to compete with animals already there.  The relocated animals can also carry diseases. 

 

When repopulating wild population, domesticated species to not necessarily thrive.  For their behavior has changed to be domesticated, rather than what is needed to survive.

 

Caveats?

The focus of the book is on the species which are overpopulated due to human intervention.  Not all species are overpopulated.  More research would be needed for species which have not recovered.

 

This book shares a diverse number of species which have flourished from human contact.  Sharing the biological traits of a species, a history of how they were endangered, how culture changed to support them, the consequences of their overpopulation, and the political conflict on population control.  Even with the diversity and varied details on each species, the explanations can become self-similar.  Such as the conflict over how to manage a species, from different lethal to nonlethal methods, can appear to be the same as other species but with different interest group names.
