Purpose, Goals, and The Conversation

  • Purpose: A society in which disagreement, learning, and enjoyment are encouraged in conversations
    • Encourage everyone to question, to inquire, to search for more information
      • Learning never spots 
    • Hear people from different backgrounds
      • Having different backgrounds means that others see the same ideas, in different ways.  Those different ways can facilitate ways to improve the ideas
    • Improve listening skills
      • Listening is an active activity
      • Very difficult because each individual has many distractions
      • Part of having a conversation, means listening to what others have to say
    • Belonging
      • More and more are feeling lonely, while humans are social animals
    • Support disagreement
      • Negative feedback
      • Accepting of differences
      • Disagreeing is difficult.  Need to support disagreement, to have disagreement
    • Support Agreement
      • Positive feedback
      • Without some support, all that can be hear are the things that are wrong
      • Emotional understanding


  • How to achieve purpose? 
    • Book club events
      • A major source of conversation, in which people come to hear conversations
      • Provide direction for conversation
      • A very active activity that encourages participation
    • Community events
        • Provide application to what is learned
      • Book shop visits
        • Talking about books and ideas that we want to talk about
      • Museums
      • Zoos / Aquariums
