Excerpts

“I remembered how my father had once told me that on earth there were men called astronomers whose task it was to keep track of his rising and setting.  They were held in highest esteem among mortals, kept in palaces as counselors of kings, but sometimes my father lingered over one thing or another and threw their calculations into despair.  Then those astronomers were hauled before the kings they served and killed as frauds.  My father had smiled when he told me.  It was what they deserved, he said.  Helios the Sun was bound to no will but his own, and none might say what he would do.” – Madeline Miller, Chapter One, Page 15

“Let me say what sorcery is not: it is not divine power, which comes with a thought and a blink.  It must be made and worked, planned and searched out, dug up, dried, chopped and ground, cooked, spoken over, and sung.  Even after that, it can fail, as gods do not.  If my herbs are not fresh enough, if my attention falters, if my will is weak, the draughts go stale and rancid in my hands.” – Madeline Miller, Chapter Seven, Page 75

“Among the gods there are a few who have the gift of prophecy, the ability to peer into the murk and glimpse what fates will come.  Not everything may be foreseen.  Most gods and mortals have lives that are tied to nothing; they tangle and wend now here, now there, according to no set plan.  But then there are those who wear their destinies like nooses, whose lives run straight as planks, however they try to twist.  It is these that our prophets may see.” – Madeline Miller, Chapter Ten, Page 116

Review

Is This An Overview?

The immortals do not fear death, but they do fear power.  Among the immortals is a hierarchy defined by power, with Circe wielding none.  Sibling or not, many gods find ways to demean Circe.  Unlike most gods, Circe is interested in connecting to humans.  For such a connection, Circe discovered the power of witchcraft.  Power that Circe turned against a sibling as a method of retaliation.  Although other gods misused their power, Circe is used as a bargaining tool for those with more power and sent to exile.

An exile that enables Circe to refine the powers of witchcraft.  The exile has its moments of loneliness, but also company.  Circe might not be able to leave the island, but many come to Circe.  From bandits, to heroes, to gods.  Experiences that Circe learns from.  Learns to become someone with power.  Learns that those who need help, might not be noble after help is received.  Learns how to challenge the more powerful gods.  Experiences that Circe will need to protect Circe’s child from a powerful god who wants to kill the child.

Caveats?

This is a retelling of popular Greco-Roman myths.  Those who know the myths can have different reactions to this story.  Knowledge of the myths would enable a reader to better understand the politics and social structure of the gods.  But there can also be dissidence between what the reader expects of the myths, and the represented contrast.

Review of Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie

Watch Short Review

Excerpts

“In fact, all over the new India, the dream we all shared, children were being born only partially the offspring of their parents – the children of midnight were also the children of the time: fathered, you understand, by history.  It can happen.  Especially in a country which is itself a sort of dream.” – Salman Rushdie, Tick, Tock, Page 158

“How to dispense with Padma? How give up her ignorance and superstition, necessary counterweights to my miracle-laden omniscience? How to do without her paradoxical earthiness of spirit, which keeps – kept! – my feet on the ground? I have become, it seems to me, the apex of an isosceles triangle, supported equally by twin deities, the wild god of memory and the lotus-goddess of the present … but must I now become reconciled to the narrow one-dimensionality of a straight line?” – Salman Rushdie, Accident in a Washing-chest, Page 200

“”I told you the truth,” I say yet again, “Memory’s truth, because memory has its own special kind.  It selects, eliminates, exaggerates, minimizes, glorifies, and vilifies also; but in the end it creates its own reality, its heterogeneous but usually coherent version of events; and no sane human being ever trusts someone else’s version more than his own.”” – Salman Rushdie, At the Pioneer Café, Page 280

Review

Overview:

There are children born to time.  Born on midnight.  The day that India became independent.  Born to such an event has shackled them to history.  A destiny awaits them all.  Born to such a lineage has given them power.  These children have different powers, and not all the powers are wanted.  The children do not know their siblings, but create a conference for the children of midnight.  Using their power inspired change, but they were confused about the morality of their decisions.

This is a story of magical realism.  In which reality is relative to perspective.  Reality itself becomes an illusion.  A child of midnight is writing down the memory of the children.  Before the writer vanishes into dust.  Acknowledging that memory creates its own version of events.  This is a book steeped into the cultural traditions of India.  To not forget the cultural heritage.

Caveats?

The book can be difficult to read.  There is a quick transition between events, topics, and ideas that can be hard to follow.

The book has references and itself is a combination of various popular stories.  Following their narrative structure.  An extra layer of value is provided for those who already read the referenced books.

Questions to Consider while Reading the Book

•What is the raison d’etre of the book?  For what purpose did the author write the book?  Why do people read this book?
•What are some limitations of the book?
•To whom would you suggest this book?
•Who are the Midnight’s children?
•Who is the narrator and why is the narrator narrating?
•How did the narrator govern the Midnight’s Children Conference?
•Who is Padma?
•Do games have morals?
•What powers did the children of midnight have?
•How did the children use their powers?
•How does memory work?

Review of Demon Lover by Dion Fortune

This review was written by Eugene Kernes

Book can be found in:
Genre = Novel, Fantasy
Intriguing Connections = Some Type of Romance
Short Description

Excerpts

“It was useless to have the support of numbers if those who held the keys of power closed the door upon him.” – Dion Fortune, Chapter Two, Page 14

“Trained in a tradition that did not fully understand human nature, by men who believed that the race can best be served by those who have no tie or bond of affection, forgetting that it is only by loving an individual that we can learn to love the race.” – Dion Fortune, Chapter Twelve, Page 111

“Unbalanced mercy is but weakness, unbalanced justice is cruelty and oppression.” – Dion Fortune, Chapter Five, Page 285

Elaborate Description
Overview:
Lucas is a secretary who is seen as a forthcoming leader by many, but his behavior appears dangerously reckless by the few in positions of power.  What he wants is the knowledge in possession of the seniors in the group, so that it could be used.  For that Lucas seeks a secretary.  Veronica wants to be employed rather than face the emptiness of a London summer.  Among many, Lucas easily selects Veronica without giving it deeper thought as to why the choice was so easy.  Veronica begins to learn of her role, but cannot alter her course as Lucas uses some sort of power on her.  For in this occult story, knowledge is power.  The question is what they are willing to sacrifice to obtain that knowledge?  What will be scarified for love?  A philosophical tale in which the caricatures of good and evil do not fit, as what matters is the interaction between those who take different paths.

There are many philosophical themes in this book that relate to respecting different sources of knowledge and perspectives.  The differences between the theoretic and the practical.  Raising the question of who should have knowledge, determine who obtains the knowledge, who should wield knowledge, and how should knowledge be used.  All this to highlight the need for various qualities to interact rather than be segregated.  As emotions are needed to properly utilize the knowledge.  While emotions alone cannot accomplish what knowledge understands.

Problems?
The book is a complex mixture of mystery, fantasy, and romance.  Keeps the reader in suspense as to what comes next, as the results of events are unexpected.  The problem is that the writing is not always very easy to read.  Containing some poor transitions between the various events, which prevents flow.

Questions to Consider while Reading the Book
•What is the raison d’etre of the book?  For what purpose did the author write the book?
•What is Lucas’s position in the occult group?
•How do people perceive Lucas?
•Who is Lucas?
•What does Lucas want?
•What will Lucas do if he obtains knowledge?
•Why does Lucas seek a secretary?
•Why does Veronica seek employment?
•How is Veronica perceived by others?
•What does Veronica have in the events that Lucas initiates?
•Who is Veronica?
•Why does Veronica go along with Lucas?

Review of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

This review was written by Eugene Kernes

Book can be found in:
Genre = Novel, Fantasy

Elaborate Description

An unexpected adventure fell upon Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo because the fourteenth member of a party of thirteen dwarfs. The dwarfs needed a burglar, so the wizard Gandalf picked Bilbo. Bilbo himself is a hobbit and hobbits do not wear shoes as their feet have natural thick soles. That same attribute makes hobbits unheard when moving about the wild. But the silent quality is not the reason why Gandalf chose Bilbo, he was chosen simply because fate deemed it.

The dwarf’s quest was to regain control of The Lonely Mountain which was guarded by a dragon. Although Bilbo did not wish to go on the adventure, he was tricked into going. The adventure itself held many twists, turns, and vicissitudes. Goblins, wargs, trolls, big spiders, eagles, elves and other races and creatures make an appearance into this fantasy tail. Various cultures of the races are represented in song, gesture, and history.

Review of The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien

This review was written by Eugene Kernes

Book can be found in:
Genre = Novel, Fantasy

Elaborate Description

From Bilbo’s adventure with the dwarfs to regain the Lonely Mountain, Bilbo found a ring. Many years later, Gandalf’s suspicious of the ring proved true, that the ring was the one ring of power. With the ring found, the forces of Sauron started to move to find the ring. The ring was no longer safe in the Shire. With a covert plan, the adoptive son of Bilbo, Frodo left the Shire with Sam. Merry and Pippin knew of the covert plan, and forced Frodo to accept them in the travels. The ring went to the Rivendell to seek the council of Elrond. The council decided that the ring should be destroyed, and a fellowship of the ring was created to help the ring-bearer get to Mordor, the only place in which the ring can be destroyed.

This book is mostly an adventure book with many events happening in between. There are moments of council where a group provides information and decides what actions to take. There are moments of intense battles. Allies and enemies have various histories and cultures. Situations have vicissitudes which mold depth into the story.

Review of The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolkien

This review was written by Eugene Kernes

Book can be found in:
Genre = Novel, Fantasy

Elaborate Description

This book follows two stories as the companions of the ring-bearer were split into two. The first story follows the plight of Pippin, Merry, Gimli, Aragorn, and Legolas. The second story follows the story of Frodo and Sam. The book is very immersive as some parts of the story impacts others of the story without them knowing, only to be told as a story itself later. Loyalty and friendship are lessons of the tales which are surrounded by history and war.

Following the story right after the Fellowship of the Ring, Aragorn tried but could not find the whereabouts of Frodo. Boromir sounded his horn, which Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas went to. Boromir was found dead with orcs all around and no sign of Pippin and Merry. After holding Boromir’s funeral by boat, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas decided to go after Pippin and Merry as they were definitive danger as they accepted that Frodo and Sam had left of their own accord on the quest to destroy the ring. What follows are many chance meeting and renewed allies. Pippin and Merry aided the Ents, tree herders in their decision to go to war. The riders of Rohan and their king were aided by Pippin, Merry, Legolas and Gandalf against the orcs.

Contemporaneously as many battles were held at Helm’s deep and Isengard, the ring-bearer Frodo and Sam were able to sneak their way closer to their destination, Mordor. Lost as Frodo and Sam were, they found a guide in the disguise of Gollum. Gollum led through many dangerous places which Frodo and Sam would not have escaped on their own accord. Along their journey, they found and unexpected ally in Faramir, Boromir’s younger brother. Faramir aided the hobbits and warned them of the passage which Gollum wishes to take the hobbits to. The passage is rarely used or known and holds a guardian. Gollum leads the hobbits to the passage without telling the hobbits of the guardian, as he will wants the One Ring. In the events that follow, Sam is forced to make a dire choice.

Review of The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien

This review was written by Eugene Kernes

Book can be found in:
Genre = Novel, Fantasy

Elaborate Description

Following the previous book, Frodo was captured by the orcs so it is now up to Sam to rescue him. After being saved, Frodo’s personality shows how much he has been influenced by the One Ring. Sam and Frodo needed to make a long journey to the mountain where the One Ring was forged, all the while eluding pursuers. Gollum was one of the pursuers. During their travels, the Sauron’s army began to mobilize and the Eye shifted focus to the Black Gate.

The army out of Minas Morgul, the one Frodo, Sam and Gollum saw in the previous book, was led by the captain of the Nazgul. This army made its way to Gondor itself. Gondor fell hopeless until the Riders of Rohan came. The Nazgul captain fell and this battle was one, but it was a pyric victory. The remaining forces were few and they decided that those able and willing would go to the Black Gate to draw Sauron’s attention away from the ring-bearer.

The story is very immersive. Seeing each event from various perspectives. This did have a problem as sometimes going back and forth in time caused confusion as to the timing of events. A the end of the book, at the end of the adventure, marked the end of the war of the rings. The author provides histories of the races and synopsis of events before the war of the rings.

Unfortunately, at the same time a house-elf warned Harry not to go to Hogwarts and used magic in the house that ruined the evening. Review of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

This review was written by Eugene Kernes

Book can be found in:
Genre = Novel, Fantasy

Elaborate Description

This book reveals some history surrounding the death of Harry’s parents. The story starts as usual with the Dursleys mistreating Harry made worse by the visit of Aunt Marge. Marge enrages Harry to the point were Harry uses magic. In frustration, Harry leaves the Dursleys and ends up in the Leaky Cauldron hoping to find a room. Cornelius Fudge was waiting for Harry next to the Leaky Cauldron and explained the situation that Harry was in, without explaining why he was there. Harry learns later that the escaped prisoner from Azkaban was on the loose and with the aim to kill Harry.

Even before Hogwarts, Harry is guarded. The guards include dementors, Azkaban guards looking for the escaped prisoner. The year in Hogwarts is spent learning more than just the normal magic, but on the side learning dangerous powerful magic from the first Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher who actually teaches. Ron spends a lot of time being mad at Hermione as Hermione’s new pet cat keeps trying to eat Ron’s pet rat. As the three friends had vindicated Hagrid from a prior crime, Hagrid was able to teach a course on magical creatures. Hagrid course takes a turn for the worse when a creature bites Malfoy, with the creature needing a legal defense.

Rowling makes the reader feel like a detective by frequently making passing hints at some sort of hidden secret. The way all the hints culminate into revealing truths is startling. The complexity of the situation is not lost in the eloquence in the writing of this book.

Review of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling

Book can be found in:
Genre = Novel, Fantasy

Elaborate Description

The previous year ended with the servant of Voldemort in search for his master. This year shows many machinations of what appear to be foreboding events. Starting with a dream and Harry’s scar hurting, then a foreboding Dark Mark at the Quidditch World Cup. Voldemort’s supporters who are called Death Eaters had started a ruckus. But that was only the beginning of the plan to revive Voldemort.

This year, Hogwarts is holding a Triwizard tournament which has not been held in roughly a century in the hope to gain cooperation between different wizarding schools and societies. The tournament was meant to have a single champion from each school compete at three different tasks. But, Harry Potter was chosen as a fourth champion, and the tournament does allow anyone chosen to resign. It was not Harry Potter who had put his name into the Goblet of Fire which decided who the champions would be. Given that the previous tournaments had champions die, it was assumed that someone had put Harry Potters’ name into the Goblet so that he may die in the tournament. Harry Potter must overcome the trials of the tournament, and learn why his name was entered.

Review of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling

This review was written by Eugene Kernes

Book can be found in:
Genre = Novel, Fantasy

Elaborate Description

The Dark Lord Voldemort has returned but rather than prepare for war, the Ministry of Magic denounces it as lies. Those who are disagree with the Ministry’s version of the truth are vilified such as Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore. News to discredit both is ubiquitous. Even as Potter is put to trial due to using magic to fight of dementors, events are set up to prevent Potter from receiving help. Fortunately, Potter has allies in the Order of the Phoenix who come to his aid. Order of the Phoenix is a secret society which has few members but are tasked with fighting Voldemort and his Death Eaters.

Things at Hogwarts are more difficult than previous years. Besides being the 5th year when the students take O.W.L. exams which determine their future careers, many of the school believe the news about Harry Potters’ lies. Made even worse with their new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher who reports directly to the Ministry. The miseries of the year are alleviated only with a secret club formed to practice magic which Harry Potter teaches. The Order of the Phoenix and those who believe that the Dark Lord has returned need find ways to prevent Voldemort from achieving his aim which seems to be a weapon he did not possess the last time he was around.

There is a bit of a disconnect between the previous books in the series and this one which has to do with Harry Potter. For some reason, Harry’s personality is drastically different. Not that some change due to previous books events should not have occurred, but the change is too drastic as to be meant for drama rather than narrative.

Elaborate Description

The wizarding war wages in full with many falling who are not part of the war. The Ministry of Magic has fallen to the Dark Lord’s creed. This year, Harry is not returning to Hogwarts but going to complete Dumbledore’s task of finding and destroying the Horcruxes. Before Harry can take on the task, the Order of the Phoenix needs to protect and move Harry to a safe location as Harry will be targeted shortly after his mothers’ spell is broken.

Harry does not go alone on this quest, but is aided by Hermione and Ron. While trying to learn of the locations of the Horcruxes they will learn many hard-kept secrets which will make them question Dumbledore, the task, themselves, and their friendship. A most ancient secret is sought out by few because most believe the secret to be a fairy tale, that of the Deathly Hallows. Harry learns that Voldemort himself is after one of the three Hallows believing it to be needed to defeat Harry. Harry, Hermione, and Ron will need to find and destroy the Horcruxes while figuring out what the Deathly Hallows are.
