How The Book List Gets Made

Submit suggestions to eugenefrominquiry@gmail.com

Each member is allowed to suggest the following per polling cycle:

4 Non-fiction books

2 Fiction books

Note: If the book is listed in the club, I ask permission to credit who suggested the book.  This way, the source of the book suggestion is clear.  I only use first name and initial of last name (e.g. Eugene K.)  Names will not be used without permission (and will not affect the book's listing in the club.)

Book Selection Process

General

Books are selected based on poll ranking, and genre diversity.  Poll ratings are taken into account as they let me know which books are preferred reads. Genre diversity is taken into account to make sure the books are inclusive of everyone's interest and facilitate curiously about topics allowing those who do not know much about the topic, to get introduced to it via book and discussion.

Page length is tentatively taken into account, used to make sure that very long books are not being read back to back.

Books listed will try to separate similar genre / topic from each other.  Without reading the book, the host, Eugene, cannot tell what particular topics and examples are in the books.  If the examples used end up being similar, it was not intentional.

Notes on genre diversity:

1) Genre is based on what book sources list the book under.  The most relevant.  Not necessarily that it actually reads like that genre to individualized background.

2) If there is a lot of interest in the genre, or topic, there is higher chance of more being listed.  Different genres will be listed, but selection will depend on what everyone wants to read.  More books suggested within a genre, is a huge indicator of interest.

3) If books with the same genre and topic have a high poll ranking, only one of them will be selected (maybe more).

4) Same genre can have very different topics.  Having selected a book from a genre does not disqualify other topics within the genre from being selected.

5) Each polling cycle is independent.  Same topics can be listed again, just not within the same polling cycle.

Fiction

Poll ranking and genre diversity are taken into account, but less so than for non-fiction.  Fiction books will be taken based on relevance to an associated non-fiction book.  This is meant to apply the concepts learned in the non-fiction book, to the fiction book.  To allow fiction and non-fiction readers to meet and discuss and potentially have some cross-over.

Not a requirement to read the non-fiction book to join the fiction book event.  Meant to provide an opportunity to look at a topic from various perspectives.

Book Suggestion Guide

Below is a guide to suggesting books.  Not a checklist, means not all need to be fulfilled.  Mandatory ones have ** next to them.

Requirements:

1)** They are your suggestions: Not because someone influenced you.  Although if you appreciate someone's suggestion, then suggest it to the club.

2)** Not already listed books: There are many books to read, with each book given a chance. Some popular demand book may be reread in the future, but there needs to be more time before that happens.

3) Topic interests you: Curiosity about what the book contains.

4) You want to understand the topic: You heard about the topic and do know know it, but would like to.  Or have heard of it and want to know more.

5) You want to discuss the topic: You want to hear what other people think about the topic.

Not Required:

1)** The moderator (Eugene) has to like it:  Many listed books were not those that the moderator (Eugene) would have read without the club.  They were still listed, read, and discussed.  The moderator does not have additional voting rights than any other member.

2)** Not suggesting previously suggested books that did not make the list: Previous suggested books can be listed. Interests changes and the other books being suggested have also changed.

3) To have read the book before submission: We will read the book together.

4) Other people might like it: It does not matter if others will like or not like the book, we will have a wonderful discussion on it.

5) Non-controversial: People have different views, that is normal and expected. Better to discuss a topic and think about how to appropriately discuss it than let it cause more frustration.

6) That the book has to be short enough: Books are listed in advance.  Read at your own pace.
